BitTorrent is a protocol that allows the user to perform downloads. Unlike other networks, users share pieces in random order, which will be be reconstituted later to create the file. The sharing system optimizes the overall network performance, since there are no queues, and all share pieces together, not overloading a central server, as with download sites, for example. - Adapted from Wikipedia.

The objective of this tutorial is to teach you how to use these files so you can make downloads to your computer.

To access the BitTorrent network you need a program installed on your computer. There are many programs available. For this tutorial we will use one of the presently known programs, µTorrent, or popularly known as uTorrent.

To download is simple, click on this link, and then click in the "Free Download for Windows" button, as shown in the image below.

Soon after the download completes, run the installer you just to download it. Installation is very simple, you will be asked your language, where you want to install the program, etc. These options if you do not want to change, simply click the "Next" button, but pay close attention because during installation will present you a Release Bundle or Special Offer, as shown in the image below. If you do not want to download it (recommended), just uncheck the box "Yes! I'd love to check out this download!"

The µTorrent will run immediately after installation. It is worth mentioning that the program is placed to start every time you log on to your computer, which can generate a large demand for resources and therefore slow down the computer.

To disable this feature, simply go to the Options menu and then on Preferences. In this window, clear the "Start µTorrent when Windows Starts" option, as you can see in the image below.

Now let's the part that interests us most, that is, "How to download it these files". To do this, we'll need a site that allows you to share these files, popularly known as "trackers", and there are many. For this tutorial we will use The Pirate Bay, which is one of the most popular, to enter it, click this link.

For purposes of example in this tutorial, I will search an episode of The Walking Dead, I will use the international standard search, that is "Series Name S00E00", where S means the season and the E means the episode.

The layout of the Pirate Bay closely resembles Google, just write what you want in the middle box and click the "Pirate Search" button.

Soon after you will see all the results shown to those keywords. You will see the available files, its download size, plus the number of Seeders (SE) and Leechers (LE). The leechers are users who are downloading the file at the moment, as you will be soon. The seeders are people who have completed the download, have the complete file on the computers and gladly are sharing with you. For this reason, the higher the number of Seeders, the faster your download. Following this line of reasoning, we can affirm that without seeders files can not be completed.

Click the file name you want to download.

On the download page that opened, most trackers allows you to choose to download a .torrent file to your computer or open a magnet link. For those trackers that allow you to download the torrent file, just click the download button to download the torrent file and open it, µTorrent will automatically open.

The Pirate Bay, in the date of creation of this tutorial, only allowed to download through magnet links. These links have the basic information so that you can start downloading without the need to download a file to your computer. Click the "Get This Torrent" link. If this is the first time you do this, your Internet browser will ask to open the appropriate program, just allow this because soon after the µTorrent opens.

When the uTorrent opens, it will provide various information about the requested link, such as which are the files that are within that torrent, where you want to save, which the folder name where the files will stay. In addition you can see the advanced options to choose the maximum speed of receiving and sending the files. When you are ready to begin, click the Ok button.

That's it! The file has been added to your list and the download started. Now just wait for the end so you can see the files.

It is worth mentioning that when you finish the download, the program will remain open sharing the file with others. If you want, you can pause, or delete from the list (this will not delete the files that you downloaded).

Some important notes:

  • There are other torrent trackers in the world, such as KickAss Torrents, or Demonoid, among others. The operation is very similar.
  • The spread of viruses and malware is huge for this type of content, therefore make sure to use known sites and read the reviews before downloading a file.
  • Always keep your antivirus updated.
